　Gifts from Beyond　つづきです。これはめずらしい、何度も体験した者の報告なので、大事なところは省略しないで、そのまま引用・意訳します。ふたりのMediumのそれぞれのIndian Spirit　Guideの、違ったApportのやりかたが示されていますが、実態としては、同じように何かが生み出される、運び込まれるということになります。

　ここで、気がついたのは、このApportの際のSéanceのムードが、深刻なお通夜のようなものではなく、パーティのような、にぎやかで、楽しいものだということで、みんなどんなGiftをもらえるかと、クリスマスで子ども達が楽しんでいるようなムードです。

これは、非常に大事なことで、そういう明るいPositiveなムードがApportsに必要なEnergyを補給するように思えます。有名なカナダの“Philip　Experience”では、１年間、まじめに何かを起こそうとしていたときは、何もおきなかったが、Partyのようにして、にぎやかに雑談していたら、はじめて反応がおき、それからは、ずっと反応し続けたという大事な記録があります。どうも、このApportも同じように思われます。

The guides of the two mediums who were responsibles for bringing these apports would never take these séances seriously. It was the party spirit that animated the proceedings.  Indeed, White Hawk, the guide of Mrs. Kathleen Barkel, always described it as a party. …

このApportsを運ぶのに責任のあるMediumsのふたりのガイドたちは、この種のSéanceは特にまじめにとっていないようだ。これらの現象が起きるのはパーティの熱気が活性化する働きをするからだ。実際、Mrs. Kathleen BarkelのガイドであるWhite Hawkは、いつもこの種のApportsを見せる機会をPartyだと呼んでいた。

　The only physical indication that Mrs. Barkel had that an apport séance would shortly take place was the curious fact that for days before hand her figure began to sewll. AT the end of the séance her body resumed its normal size. I do not know the explanation. My theory is that in some way or other her body was used to store the ecloplasm required to re-materialise the objects after they had been brought through the atmosphere, doubtless in their atomic form. Obviously, with objects brought from miles away, they would first have to be dematerialized in order that the walls, bricks and mortar should prove no obstacles. The guide responsible for this phenomenon insisted the articles were not stolen. Sometimes they were lost and could not be reclaimed because their owners had died. They might be objects that were buried beneath the earth or below the water for years, or even centuries.

ApportsのSéanceが予定される何日か前から、Mrs. Barkelの体形が膨らんだようになるのが、唯一の目立った肉体的な変化であった。Séanceが終わると彼女の身体は元のサイズにもどった。わたしにはどうしてだか理由がわからない。私自身の考えでは、何らかの形で彼女の身体に、遠方の空間から物体がまちがいなくAtomicな状態で運び込まれたアト、物体が形をなす際に必要になるEctoplasmが貯えられるからであろう、明らかなことだが、何マイルも離れた地点から運び込まれる物体は、まず壁やレンガや土塀を通過するために物としてのかたちを壊してしまう必要があるのだ。このApportsを起こした責任者であるSpirit Guideは物体は盗まれたものでないと主張する。ときには、それらは紛失して、そのあと所有者が死んでしまってクレームが発生しない場合である。あるいは地中にうずもれていた場合とか何年も何世紀も水中に沈んでいた場合とか。

Often the apport reveals careful and intelligent planning on the part of its spirit donor. The apports I have received, and that I have seen produced for others, vary in nature. Some are semi-precious stones. I have also seen a sapphire set in silver, a jade ear-piece set in nine-carat gold, a gold locket and a gold ring with three opals and four diamonds.

しばしば、このApportが起きるに際して、Spiritである供与者のほうで、慎重な、知的な計画があることを示す場合がある。私が受け取ったApportsや、ほかの人が受け取るのを見たApportsは、それぞれ自然と違っているようだ。ある場合は宝石並みの石であった。私が見たのは銀に埋められたサファイア、９カラットの金にうめられたヒスイの耳かざり、金のロケット、３つのオパールと４つのダイアモンドがついた金の指輪などである。

The number of people at the séance party does not seem to affect the results. I have been present with a dozen others and as many as fifty. The number of apports received in one night have varied from twelve to twenty.

Séanceに参加する人々の人数自体はあまり影響しないようだ。私は１２人ほどの参加者のSéanceにでたこともあれば、５０人ほどの場合もあった。一晩に受け取ったApport贈り物の数は１２個から２０個ほどであった。

He (Guide White Hawk) always calls his medium “my coat”, and the apports, no matter what their nature, were “stones”. These were brought, he said, not as a scientific test, or to confound sceptics, but just to amuse his friends.　

ガイドWhite Hawkは、いつも彼の主人であるMediumを“わたしの上着”とよび、出てくる物体が何であれ、Apportsされるものを”石“と呼んだ。彼は、これらのApportsは科学者達のテスト用に運んだのでもなければ、疑り深い人たちを困惑させるためでもなく、ただ彼の友達仲間を楽しませるためのものだといっていた。

The production of the apports was a fascinating experience. The entranced Kathleen Barkel was made to stand up by White Hawk, and walk around the room with her right hand out-stretched. Then he usually called one or two people to “help” him. I did so several times. I was asked to place one hand on the medium’s wrist and another on her arm. In this fashion we walked round the room while White Hawk made quick grabs on space with the hand that was free. Suddenly, he would exclaim delightedly, “Got! Got! ”

贈り物・物体が生まれる過程はとても魅惑的といえるものである。Trance状態にあるMrs. BarkelはガイドであるWhite Hawkに立つように指示され、そして、右手を押し出して部屋の中をまわるようにいわれる。それから、彼はいつも一人か二人のヘルパーを求める。私はそのヘルパーの役割を数回行った。私は一方の手をMediumの手首に、そしてもう一方の手を腕にまわすように言われる。こういうスタイルでわれわれが部屋の中を歩いている間に、White Hawkは自由な手ですばやく空間をつかみ取るようなしぐさをする。突然、彼はうれしそうに“掴んだ！、つかんだ！”と叫ぶ。

　Then he put the medium’s hands between my two hands, asking three or four people to come forward. Each had to put one hand above mine, and the other below it. This, said White Hawk, enabled the object to be restored to its original form. I was then asked to remove my hands but to keep them clasped. Presently, he asked me whether I had received my gift. “I cannot feel anything,” I replied.

それから、彼はMediumの両手をわたしの両手の間に置き、３人か４人前に来るようにいう。それぞれ、一方の手を私の手の上に、もう一方を下におくようにいわれる。これは、White Hawkに言わせると、物体が元の形になるようにするためである、と。そして、私は手を離してよい、ただし、握ったままでといわれる。やがて、彼はわたしにギフトを受け取ったかとたずねる。わたしは、なんとも感じないよと応える。

A few seconds later, there was a sensation of heat between the palms of my hands. Then slowly, I felt and object becoming solid. “Hold on to it,” he said. “Don’t unclasp your hands.” I resumed my seat, maintaining my clasped hands, noticing the object gradually became cooler. Every few minutes, as they received their gifts, other members of the séance resumed their seats, clasping their hands. When the séance was over we were free to examine the apports. Mine, on this occasion, was an amethyst.

ほんのすこしアト、私の両手の手のひらに熱を感じ始めた。それから、ゆっくりと、物が固まっていくのを感じた。しっかりもって、両手をほどかないで、　とかれは言った。私は席に戻り、両手を握ったまま、物体が冷えていくのを感じていた。ほどよい間隔を置いて、順番にSéanceメンバーがギフトを受けとて席に戻っていった。両手を握り締めながら。Séanceが終わってから、それぞれ自分がもらったギフトを点検した。私のものは、この時は、アメジストであった。

　“How do you bring these objects here?” I asked White Hawk. He replied: “I can only explain it by telling you that I speed up the atomic vibrations until the stones are disintegrated. Then they are brought here and I slow down the vibrations until they become solid again.　一体、どのようにしてこれらの物体をはこんでくるの？と私がWhite Hawkに訊ねたら、彼の応えはこうであった。わたしは石がもとのかたちを失くすまでAtomの振動をSpeed Upさせ、ここへ届いたら、今度は固型にするために振動をSlow downさせるのだとしか言えない。

On the other occasions I have pressed for details of how vibrations are speed up and lowered. None was forthcoming. Perhaps four-dimensional happenings are beyond our three dimensional understanding. …

別の機会に、振動をUpとかLowerとかいうけれど、実際的にはどうするのかと更に追求を重ねたが、なにも返答はなかった。多分、四次元世界で起きることを三次元世界の人間には理解できないことなのであろう。

Red Cloud, through Estelle Roberts, similarly treated his apport séance as parties. The last I attended was a memorable evening, for it was the successful reply to a “challenge” made by the medium’s son-in-law, Kenneth Evett. A few days before, Kenneth had jokingly complained that he had never received an apport. This seemed to amuse Red Cloud, for Mrs. Roberts announced that she could see her guide smiling. Red Cloud said that he would bring as a gift “anything within reason”. “Could I have an apport from Egypt?” asked Evett, with a note of challenge in his voice. The medium said the guide’s reply was: “Better be careful, you may get a beetle.” To this Kenneth answered: “That would be fine, provided the beetle was not alive.”

Red CloudはMediumであるEstelle Robertsを通して、彼のApport　SéanceをWhite Hawk同様、パーティとみなしていた。最後に私が参加したSéanceは記憶に残るものであった、というのは、Kenneth EvettというMediumの義理の息子の挑戦を受けて立ち、みごとに成功したものであった。二三日前、Kennethは冗談のように、自分は一度もApportギフトを受け取ったことが無いと不満を洩らした。このことは、Red Cloudを喜ばせたようで、Mrs. RobertsがガイドのRed Cloudが笑っているのが見えると伝えた。　Red Cloudは理屈に合うものならなんでもギフトとして運んでくるよと言った。“エジプトからの贈り物が欲しい”とEvettは、挑戦するような調子で求めた、それに対するMediumの返答は、ガイドが“注意した方がよいよ、もしかして、Beetleがくるかもしれないよ”といったとか。これに対して、Kennethは“生きてはいないBeetleであれば、OKだよ“と応えたのであった。

I was one of fifty people who assembled at this apport party, which lasted for two hours. Everyone received a gift, and some came for absent individuals. I counted them at the end of the session- there were sixty-two spirit gifts. Red Cloud’s manner of production differed from that of White Hawk. The room was darkened, but a faint light came through one window. A luminous trumpet was placed in the middle of the room. Red Cloud spoke through it after his medium was entranced. Like White Hawk, he was in jocular and witty mood.

私は、このApport Partyに参加した５０人にのぼるメンバーのひとりであった。それは２時間続いた。誰もがギフトをもらい、いくつかは欠席者のためにも出てきた。すべてが終わってから、私は数えてみたが、６２個の霊界からの贈り物があった。　Red Cloudのやりかたは、White Hawkとは違っていた。部屋は暗かったが、かすかな明かりが一つの窓からとどいていた。光輝くトランペットが部屋の中央におかれていた。Red CloudがMediumがTrance状態に入ったあと、それを通して話した。White Cloud同様、彼もこっけいな、機知に富んだムードにいるようだった。

All the apports came through the trumpet, which was, as usual, a megaphone made of tin. Some were received through the narrow mouthpiece. Others came through the broad end. As the trumpet gyrated and whirled above our heads, we could often hear the objects rattling inside as they presumably became solidified. One extraordinary fact was that some of the gifts which came through the mouthpiece were larger than its diameter, as I proved by measuring them. Like White Hawk, Red Cloud would be delightedly say, “Got!” This indicated that a gift was ready for presentation. The guide named the individual who was to come forward and receive it. You placed your hands beneath the trumpet and heard it rattle through until it dropped into your palms.

すべてのApportsギフトはトランペットから出てきた。そのトランペットはいつもとおり、ブリキで作られたメガホンであった。あるものは、ギフトを狭い口にあたるほうから受け取り、ある者は広い出口の方から受け取った。トランペットがわれわれの頭上を旋回したり、回転したりするにつれ、多分、物体がだんだん固まってきてからからと音を立て始めるのをしばしば聞いた。目だったケースとして、ギフトのいくつかがトランペットの口の方から出てきたが、直径は出口よりも大きいものであった。わたしは自分で計ってみたので確かだ。White Hawkがやったように、Red Cloudもうれしそうに“できあがった”と叫んだ、それはギフトがあげられる状態になったということだ。ガイドはそれぞれの名前を呼んで前に来て受け取るようにといった。両手をトランペットのしたにおき、がらがらと音がしながら手のひらに落ちてくるのを掴むのであった。

The party spirit was in evidence from the start. Charles, the medium’s husband, was proud of his collection of apports. …

Partyの気分は最初からあきらかであった。Mediumの夫であるCharlesはApportsギフトの収集を誇りにしていた。

“Have you got all your apports?” Red Cloud asked him. “Yes,” he replied, tapping the slight bulge he could feel when he touched his jacket.　“Here are two that you haven’t got,” said the guide. “Come forward.” Charles moved to the trumpet, heard the familiar rattling sound and received once again the two apports that were deposited on his person when the séance began.

Red Cloudは彼に、ギフトをみんなもらったかいとたずね、彼はジャケットにさわると感じられる膨れたところをたたきながら、イエスと応えた。ここにまだ二つ残っているといい、前に来るようにと言った。Charlesがトランペットに近づくと、いつものがらがらの音が聞こえ、もう一度、ふたつのApportsを受け取った、それはSéanceが始まるときに自分であずけておいたものであった。

Meanwhile, as apport after apport was received, Kenneth Evett waited impatiently. After about an hour, a curious splashing sound, reminiscent of waves breaking, could be heard within the trumpet. Then Red Cloud asked Iris Evett, Kenneth’s wife, to approach the trumpet and receive for her husband “one of the most sacred beetles, a most beautiful specimen”. The guide asked that it be handled carefully and not pressed too hard, as it was not yet sufficiently solidified.

こうして、次から次へとギフトは受け取られた。例のKenneth　Evettは、うずうずしながら待っていた。しかし、約１時間後、奇妙な波のこわれる音がトランペットの奥から聞こえてくるようになった。そこで、Red CloudはKennethの妻のIrisにでてきて、トランペットの口から最も聖なるBeetle,もっとも美しい標本を夫のために受け取るようにと言った。ガイドは、手厚く扱うように、堅く握らないで、まだ充分固まっていないからといった。

My curiosity aroused, I asked Red Cloud where the apport had come from. “Abydos,” he replied. As I had never heard this name before, I inquired if Red Cloud would kindly spell it. He did so, letter by letter, while I recorded the name.

わたしの好奇心は呼び起こされた、私はRed Cloudにギフトはどこから来たのかと訊ねた。“Abydos”アビドスと彼は応えた。私はコンナ名前を聞いたこともなかったので、Red Cloudにどうスペルのかとたずねた。彼は、わたしが記録している間、文字ごとに教えてくれた。

　The climax to the séance was the production of about a dozen apports, pouring through the trumpet at the same moment. Later, I examined the scarab with interest. It was a beautiful specimen, and edged with gold. Other gifts received that night included two figures of Buddha, some praying beads, and a collection of precious and semi-precious stones, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, amethysts, turquoise, onyx, topaz and opals.　このSéanceのクライマックスは１ダースものギフトが同時にトランペットから流れ出たことであった。後ほど、私はスカラベを興味を持って調べた。それは美しい標本であった。縁は金で出来ていた。ほかにどんなギフトがでてきたかというと、仏像が二体、お祈りの数珠、たくさんの宝石、石などーサファイア、エメラルド、ルビー、アメジスト、トルコ石、オニックス、トパーズ、オパールなどであった。

Kenneth Evett provided a fitting sequel when I next met him. His curiosity aroused, he had gone to the British Museum, to the Department of Egyptian Antiquities. There he had produced his apport, and asked for an expert opinion. He was told that it was genuine, a fine specimen, of the type usually found in … Abydos!

Kenneth Evettはつぎに出会ったとき、その続きのような話をしてくれた。彼は好奇心がわきでて、British Musemを訪問し、エジプト製品のデパートをたずねた。そこで彼はあのとき受け取ったギフトをだし、専門家の意見を求めた。彼は、これはホンモノで、素晴らしい標本だ、そしてAbydosで見つかるものだといわれた。　Abydos!

ここに紹介したのはBarbanellが参加したGenuine Psychicの示したApport現象でしたが、有名なDr. Nandor Fodorはめずらしい蛇を運び出したSéanceに参加したことがあり、それはMediumが持ちこんだものであったとか。インチキを暴露したケースを報告していました。インチキはいつも、どこにでもおり、ホンモノもいつも居て、見分けるのが大事なようです。サイキックな現象では参加者の姿勢も演出に影響するので、いちがいに、すべてインチキだと否定するわけに行かないのが、むつかしいところです。科学者の姿勢が問題だということです。
