　その１９で、猫の例をあげました。それは全く感動的な猫と人間の関係を示していました。それは悲劇でもありましたが。Nandor Fodor　の解釈もすばらしいと思います。

　今回は、犬の例を、同じくNandor Fodor　からあげます。これは、恐い話でもあるので、Nandor自身の体験談も加えておきます。

　”The Haunter is a Dog"　亡霊が犬の場合。

　Apparently, it makes no difference whether the ghost is human or not. One would expect a ghost dog to be less frightening, Pierre Van Passen's blood chilling story tells us otherwise!
明らかに、Ghost亡霊が人間であるかそれ以外であるか、違いはないようである。ひとは犬の幽霊はそれほど怖くないと思うだろう、しかし、Pierre Van Passenの血も凍るような話は、別なケースもあるということを教えてくれる。

　パリから１時間の距離にある彼の家で、夜の１１時に、地下から階段を上っているときに、彼は何かが彼にさわって通り過ぎたように思い、見ると、大きな黒い犬が降りていくのが見えた。彼は家の中を探し、彼の二匹のPolice Dogｓを家の中に入れて、一緒にさがした。犬は別にいらだったサインも見せなかった。次の夜も同じ時刻に黒い犬が降りていくのを見かけた。時計仕掛けのように、この現象は毎晩同じ時刻にくりかえされた。そして、突然、それはやんだ。彼は５週間、フランスを出なければならなかった。彼が戻ってきたとき、Maidはこの家には亡霊が棲んでいる、もうイヤだと宣言した。そこで、近所のひとが、１９歳になる息子を連れて、重い棒とレボルバー（銃）で武装してやってきてくれた。

　Van Passen　は書いている：

　We sat in my room, with the door wide open and all lights in the house on full blast. And sure enough, at the stroke of 11, we heard the patter of dog's feet coming down from the second story...A big black dog stood at the foot of the stairs in the vestibule downstairs. The dog looked up at us. My neighbor whistled and the animal wagged its tail. We started down the stairs, keeping our eyes on  the apparition. We had not gone three steps when the outline of the dog grew fainter and fainter and presently vanished altogether. There we searched high and low once more, but no trace of a dog.
　私たちはドアーを大きく開け、家の明かりをすべて煌々と照らし、私の部屋ですわっていた。そして、まちがいなく、１１時のサインとともに、私たちは犬の足音が二階から降りてくるのを聞いた。大きな黒い犬が階段の下、階下への降り口で立ち止まり、私たちを見つめた。近所から来た人が口笛を吹くと、その動物はおしっぽをふってこたえた。私たちは階段をおりようとした。目をその犬の亡霊に向けながら。三階段も降りないうちに、犬の輪郭がぼけてきて、どんどんうすくなり、とうとう完全に消えてしまった。私たちは二階も地下も、もう一度調べてみたが、犬の気配は無かった。

　So far the story is just remarkable: the dog showed signs of recognizing humans and vanished, like the Cheshire Cat, in front of the three people. They tried to joke about it, calling it "Fido, the phantom poodle." Then Poerre Van Passen decided to have his two police dogs watch the apparition.
　そこまでは、きわだった話ということである、つまり、犬は人間を認知し、そして消え去った、丁度、不思議の国アリスのなかの　有名なCheshire Cat　のように。彼らはそれに関して冗談の話題にもし、”Fido　まぼろしのプードル”と呼びさえした。そこで、Pierre Van Passenは彼の二匹のPolice Dogsにもこの亡霊を見せようと決心した。

　This led to horrible scene. The dogs pricked up their ears at the first noise on the floor above and leaped for the door. The sound of pattering feet was coming downstairs as usual, but I saw nothing. What my dogs saw I do not know, but their hair stood on edge and they retreated growling back into my room, baring their fangs and snarling. Presently they howled as if they were in excruciating pain and were snapping and biting in all directions, as if they were fighting some fierce enemy. i had never seen them in such mortal panic. I could not come to their aid, for I saw nothing to strike with the cudgel I held in my hand. The battle with the invisible foe lasted less than two minutes. then one of my dogs yelled as if he were in the death throes, fell on the floor and died.
　この私の企てが恐ろしい結果を招いた。犬たちは最初の二階からの雑音に対して耳をそばだて、ドアーにとびかかった。いつものように下りてくる音がしたが、わたしには何も見えなかった。犬たちが何を見たのかわたしは知らない、しかし、彼らの毛は逆立ち、うなりながら、私の部屋に戻った、牙をむき出し、うなりながら。やがて、彼らはまるで拷問の痛みにあっているかのようなうめきを発し、あらゆる方向にかみつき、かじろうとしていた、それはまるで彼らが凶暴な敵と格闘しているような感じであった。わたしは今までに彼らがこんなに瀕死の恐怖にあったのを見たことが無かった、しかし、私には何も見えなかったから、助けに行くことすら出来なかった。わたしは手に棍棒をもっていたのだが。見えない敵手との戦いはものの二分もかからなかった。そして、一匹の犬がまるで瀕死の苦闘をしているような叫び声を上げた、そして床に倒れ、死んでしまった。

An invisible dog, fighting and killing a police dog---surely this is material for a thriller. Only one story rivals it in horror; haunted Ballechin House in Perthshire, England, which Lord Bute had leased for an investigation by the Society for Psychical Research.
　見えない犬、警察犬と戦い、ころしてしまうーたしかに、これはスリラーのテーマである。これに匹敵するホラーストーリーはイギリスではBallechin幽霊屋敷だけである。
　Can a dog return from the dead?　I have personal contribution even though I do not know that my dog was dead or alive somewhere dreaming himself back to my house so vividly that we heard the patter of his feet and something much more credible.
　犬は死んでからかえってくる事が出来るのか。ここで、私は自分の体験を語ることが出来る。私の犬が死んだのか生きていて、もどってくることを夢見ているのか、たしかなことはわからないが。（もちろん、死んでいることはFodorは知っている。）犬の足音や、もっと確実なことを訊いたのだが。
　I gave away the dog because it chewed up valuable things during the night. It was a bad day for us. My daughter sobbed durng the night and we were all very upset as the dog was very affectionate and we loved him. I thought that the society to which the dog was returned would give him away to somebody else. It never occurred to me that dog might be destroyed, and -subsequently- I was afraid to inquire.
　わたしは飼っていた犬を、夜中に貴重品を噛むということで、もらってきたSocietyに返してしまった。そのため、わたしたちにはとても気分の悪い日であった。犬自体は非常に愛着があり、私たちはみな彼を愛した。わたしは、そのもらってきたSocietyが犬を返せば、他の適当なところにまたもらってもらうのだろうと思っていた。犬は殺されるかもしれないということは、一度も頭に浮かばなかった。その後も、恐くて、訊けなかった。

　犬はわたしのベッドルームの前の小さな通路で眠るのがいつものことであった。夜になって、突然、私は目が覚めた。なにかがドアーを入ろうとしてか、おこそうとしてか、引っかいている音がした。それは、今まではそんなことはしたことがなかったのだが。それから、私と、すでに目覚めていたワイフが、犬の足音がDrawing Roomのほうに遠ざかるのを聞いた。それから突然、娘が犬に教えたやり方で、ピアノの鍵盤をたたく音が聞こえた。娘は寝ており、私とワイフのほかには誰も居ないのであった。わたしの罪の意識が生んだ結果で、ワイフとも共有する事になったのか、それとも生きている犬の夢のあとか、死んだ犬が亡霊として訪れたのであろうか。別に恐怖は感じなかった。ただ、Wonderment感嘆だけがのこり、それは二度と繰り返されなかった。

　I have heard many similar stories. It stands out in all of them that loving animals never come back to hurt or scare. It seems as if they would only appear to give  a message of continuued existence.
　私は同じような話を沢山聞いた。すべてに通じていえることは、愛された動物たちは傷つけたり、怖がらせるためにかえってくることはない。彼らがあらわれる唯一の理由は、この世が終わっても、また別の次元があって、存在し続けているということを伝えようとしているようだ。
　The life substance or the personality that makes up a devoted animal may persist for a while. Whether it endures, that is the great question which concerns human beings and animals alike.
生命の実体というか、献身的な動物をなりたたせている個性は、死んでからも、しばらくは持続しているようだ。それが、しばらくというのではなく、ずっとそうなのかどうかは、人間にも動物にも関心のある最大の問題である。
適当に意訳しながら、Nandor Fodorの話を紹介しました。
犬も猫も、サイキックな面から見ると、人間と同じようなものだということがわかります。より繊細だということは別にして。

これを読むと、わたしは死んで無に返るのでなくて、PepeやSashaやDuchessやSandyその他、ももろの愛した犬猫が私を待っていてくれてるのかもしれないという楽しい期待が生まれてきます。
そして、犬や猫といえども簡単に死なしてはいけないということがわかります。
