「心霊現象の科学」をめぐって-その54 　S. Ralph Harlow　「A Life after Death」（1961年）を読むーその２ Anna

　この本には驚くほど多様なサイキック現象が扱われている。Maurice Barbanell　のときと同様、章を追ってではなく、At Randomに私が興味深いと思ったものを紹介してゆきたい。

　まず、Dr. Harlowの2歳年下の妹Annaの話から始めよう。すでに、Annaに関して、前回、Spraggettが紹介していたガラスのインク壺が割れた件がある。この本では当然もう少し詳しく展開されている。

　Annaがいると不思議なことが起こった。Onにしていない蓄音器が勝手にOnになり、Armが動いてレコードが鳴り出すのである。みんなで隣の部屋でおしゃべりしていて、だれもいない部屋で蓄音器が作動し始めるということは、しょっちゅう起こったらしい。

　Annaは特にApparitionｓ（幽霊、亡霊、生き霊・・・）に親しかった。HusbandのSisterが亡くなった時にも、知らせが来る前にSister-in-lawのApparitionがあらわれて、その死を知らせた。街をあるいていても、ある女のうしろに男が付き添っているのが見えた。つれのDr.（兄　Harlow）のワイフに、前から来る人が見えるかときくと、女性が歩いてくるのは見える、ただそれだけ。Annaにはその女性に付き添う男性がみえただけでなく、その男性がAnnaには自分の姿が見えているのがわかったのか合図をしたということもあった。

　Dr. Harlow夫妻、妹Anna夫妻、そして妹のHusbandのSister　Marguerite夫妻の６人である日、Pact約束　をした。みな、Life after Death　あの世での生　に深い関心をもっているので、そしてAnnaが本当にサイキックだとわかっているので、この6人の誰かが死んだら、あの世から別の世界で生きているというメッセージを送ろう、それも、なんとなくというものではなく、“We must have clear-cut evidence.”　”It must be clear-cut.”という約束をしたのであった。「証拠は誰が見ても明らかなものでなければならない。」、「絶対明白な証拠でなければ。」

　そして、Sister-in-lawが亡くなり、その日、庭でAnnaが仕事をしていた。何かを感じて二階をあおぎみると、死んだMarguerite（Sister-in-law）が白いカーテンをめくってAnnaに合図をし、いったん引き下がり、また同じことをするという動作を3回行うのを見た。AnnaはClear-cut　Evidenceを示しているのだと理解した。

　そして、1925年、Annaが亡くなった。葬式の日、わたくし、アンナの兄であるDr. Harlowが大学に戻って、女学生と面談して、William Jamesの　”Varieties of Religious Experiences”　「宗教的体験の諸相」の話をするまえに、今日、妹Annaの葬式から帰ってきたばかりだから、妹Annaのサイキックな経験について語ろうとして、Annaの名前を持ち出したとたんに、彼が、空のインク壺だが、きれいなので”重し”にもつかって、机の上に置いていた、その壺が、銃で撃ったような大きな音を立てて見事に割れたわけである。女学生はこわがって、その日のアポイントはキャンセルにしてしまい、早々に引き揚げた、そのあと、どこからともなく“Is this clear-cut evidence?”「これは、明々白々の証拠と言えるでしょう？」という声を彼は聞いたのであった。

　それから2週間たってDr. Harlowは親の家を訪問した。父親もCongregational ChurchのMinisterであった。母親が息子Ralph（Dr. Harlow）に声をかけた。見せたいものがある、と。そして、自分で机まで行き、紙を取り上げて、彼に遠くから示した。“Now tell me whose writing this is”　「だれが書いたものだと思う？」　まだ距離があったので、はっきりとはわからなかったが、筆跡はあきらかであった。”It’s Anna’s.”　“So it seems to be,” Mother said.　”It certainly looks like it.”　Then she handed me the sheet.　アンナのだ。　そう、そう見えるでしょう、と母は言った。確かにそう見える。それから、母は私にシートを手渡した。

　そこには、最後だけピリオドでおわっていない、完全な文章が書かれていた。

I cannot find words to express the joy and satisfaction of this work. We are busy every minute of the day and sometimes of the night too, but happy-oh, so happy! You  must come and see for yourselves if you would be convinced. Do come, all of you　

ここの仕事での喜びと満足をとても言葉では表せない。私たちは昼はもちろんのこと、時には夜もとても忙しい。しかし、わたしは幸せだ、とてもハッピーだ。あなたたちも納得がいったら、ぜひとも、自分でやってきて見なければならない。あなたたちみんなよ、来てよ！

“It’s Anna’s writing,” I said. “And it has her words, her phrases, and even her habit of underlining.” I looked up at Mother. “Where did you get it?” “It happened three days ago,” Mother said, “…… I woke for some strange reason. And there it was on my bedside table. ….I’m positive that it was not there when we turned out the lights….”　

アンナの書いたものだ。言葉使いも、文言も、下線を引く彼女の習慣も。どこで手に入れたの。三日前だったわ、なんとなくおかしな感じがして、夜中に目が覚めたら、それが私のベッド横のサイド・テーブルに乗っていたの。・・・私たちがライトを消したときには、そんなものはなかったのは確かよ。

“There is no doubt about what it is,” Father said to me. “But I’m sure you will disagree. We have different views on these things. It’s supernatural, indeed it is, but it’s not from Anna.” And in Father’s fundamentalism he found the answer. “This is an effort of evil spirits to mislead us. And don’t be misled by them, Ralph.”　

父はこういった。それがなんであるかについては、疑わしいものはない。しかし、お前はわたしに同意しないだろう、わたしたちはこうしたものに対しては考え方が違っているから。超自然現象であるのは事実だ、まちがいない、ただ、それはAnnaからではない、Evil Spirits　悪い魂　が私たちをだまそうとしているのだ、だから、ラルフ、だまされないように。

…….

“And Ralph,” …”I’ve searched the house from attic to cellar to find other paper just like that sheet. There is none. No single sheets; no notebooks. And I cannot remember ever seeing any like it here.”　

そして、ラルフ、私はこの家の屋根裏部屋から地下室まで、同じような紙が見つかるかと探したのよ、一枚も、ノート・ブックも見つからなかったわ。そして、わたしは一度もこのような紙を見た覚えがないわ。

　彼はNoteをあずかって自分の家に持ち帰り、妻のMarionに見せた。

“Why, it’s Anna’s, of course,” she said, quite matter-of-factly, not then knowing that the evidence gave strong indication that the note had been written by Anna after her death and had been mysteriously transported from some mysterious someplace to Mother’s bedside table in a fashion unfathomable by modern man.　

どうって、もちろん、アンナのよ。妻が言った、当然のように。この証拠が、アンナが死んだ後で書かれ、どこかわからない場所から、不思議な手段で母のベッド横のテーブルに、現代人では計り知れないような方法で、持ち運ばれたということはその時知らないで。

In the field of psychic research such an occurrence is called an apport, which means that a material object is moved from one place to another in a way that cannot be explained by physical force.　

サイキックの研究分野では、この種の出来事はApport（テレポーテーション）と呼ばれ、物体が物理的な力では説明できかねる方法で、ある場所から別の場所へ運ばれることを意味する。

Anna’s apport is not a singular experience; researchers have investigated and recorded thousands of such phenomena. But they have yet to produce a rational, acceptable explanation based on the laws of science as we know them.　

アンナのApport（物体の出現ーこの場合はメモ・シート）は一回限りの出来事ではない、研究者は何千というこの種の現象を記録し、研究してきた。しかし、われわれが知っている物理法則で説明できる合理的で妥当な解釈は、まだ今のところ誰も生み出していない。

In both of these phenomena- the incident of the inkwell and Anna’s spoken words, and Anna’s message- there are significant factors that indicate evidence of life after death. In the first place we know of Anna’s psychic sensitivity during her life, and we know she had expressed a desire to give us proof of her survival after death. And we must remember the timing of the split inkwell: the fracture occurred at the precise moment I mentioned Anna’s name. … for me there was only one Anna, and only Anna had asked for “clear-cut evidence.”　

この二つのアンナに関係のある現象ー”インク壺とClear-cut evidenceという声”、そして”アンナからのメッセージ”－をかえりみると、Life after Death　死後の世界　があるという、意味のある証拠を指し示すものであることがわかる。まず第一に、われわれはアンナが生きていた間、彼女がサイキックであったことを知っている。そしてまた、彼女がわれわれに、死後もまた別の次元で生きているということを証明したいと願っていたことも知っている。そして、われわれはインク壺が割れたタイミングに注意しないといけない。私がアンナの名前を言ったまさにその瞬間に割れたということを。わたしにとっては、アンナはただひとりであり、そしてアンナだけが「明々白々な証明」ということを求めていたのだった。

For me the most reasonable explanation is that, by means which I do not understand, my sister Anna was able to create a vibration that split the inkwell and that she did this for the　explicit purpose of letting me know that death had not blotted out her conscious personality.　

私が考えるもっともまともな説明の仕方は、私にはわからない方法で、アンナはインク壺を割るほどのVibration振動を生み出すことができ、彼女は、私に、死は、彼女らしい意識を持った個性を排除してしまったのではないということを鮮やかに示す方法で実行したのだ。

Regarding the apported note left on Mother’s bedside table, I feel that the most reasonable explanation is that it is simply what it appeared to be ---message from Anna to her parents, left where they might find it.　

母のベッドわきのテーブルにどこかから持ちこまれたノートについては、私はもっともまともな説明としては、それは単純にそれがそうであるように思われること、つまり、アンナから両親へのメッセージで、彼らが見つけられるところに残しておいたと思っている。

According to Flammarion, the breaking of glass in connection with recent death is a fairly frequent psychic phenomenon. And my friend Wainwright Evans writes me of two other such experiences, one of them very similar to that of Anna and the inkwell.　

フラマリオン（フランスの天文学者でサイキック・サイエンスの研究家）によると、死という事実があった直ぐあとに、それと関連してガラスがわれるという現象はよくあるサイキック現象らしい。私の友人　Wainwright Evans　がそんなケースについて、ふたつほど知らせてきたことがある。ひとつは、”アンナとインク壺”とまったく同じようなケースであった。

He tells me that shortly after a friend had been killed in an automobile accident his family was gathered around a large table on which stood a heavy glass paperweight that had been around the house for more than twenty years. As the dead man’s sister mentioned his name the glass paperweight split down its center.　

彼が語ったところによると、クルマの事故で友人が死んだあと、友人の家族が大きなテーブルを囲んですわっていた。そのテーブルの上には重いガラスの文鎮がのっていた、それはもう二十年以上その家にあったものである。事故死した男の妹がその彼の名前を言ったとたん、そのガラスの文鎮は真中から割れたのであった。

I cannot explain why so many of the recorded cases of paranormal experience involve the breaking of glass, unless there is indeed merit to the vibration explanation which my Smith colleague offered at the time of Anna and the inkwell. Perhaps persons who have passed over, or some of them, have access to an energy source that we have not yet discovered; perhaps this energy can be transformed into vibrations of a certain pitch that makes glass vulnerable to it.　

私にはこの超常現象に関する記録で、ガラスが割れるケースがなぜそんなに多いのか説明できない。”アンナとインク壺”の件で、スミス大学の同僚の物理学者が説明したような　Vibration　による破砕ということで説明がつくというのでなければ。きっと、向こう側に行ってしまった人たち、あるいは彼らのあるものは、われわれがまだ見つけていないエネルギーの源ともいうべきものにアクセスできるのかもしれない、そして、このエネルギーが、その振動でガラスが壊れやすくなるような程度の振動に変換できるのかもしれない。

　Allen Spraggettの”The Unexplained"のなかに、このDr. Harlowの話のつづきのようなものが載っている。（P.88-89).　それは、Dr. Harlowの妻Marionが亡くなってからの話である。このHarlowの「A Life after Death]には載っていなかったので、ほかから得た情報であろう。

”・・・We had agreed that whichever one died first would try to get a key word back to the other. Two days after her death I received a letter from a woman who did not know me, but who wrote that she had received automatic writing which purported to come from Mrs. Harlow with instructions send it to me.　

私たちはどちらか先に死んだほうがKey Wordを相手に送るようにしようと約束していた。彼女が亡くなって二日後、私は知らない女性から手紙を受け取った、彼女はAutomatic writing自動筆記　でこのメッセージを受け取り、ミセス・ハーロウからのようで、私宛に送るようにという指示がついていたとのこと。

“In the first part of that message the secret key word we had agreed to use was used four times; it was light. But that was not all.　

メッセージの最初の部分に私たちが約束した秘密のキーワードが四回書かれていた。それはLightであったが、メッセージはそれだけではなかった。

“Farther on in that same message I was told to go at ten o’clock in the evening to the cupboard where the china was kept and my wife would try to give me sign of her presence. I invited a friend to come with me as a witness.　

同じメッセージに続いて、夜の10時に食器がしまってある棚にゆくようにということであった。妻がそのとき、そこにいるサインを示すということであった。私は目撃者が必要と感じて友人を招待した。

“That evening we went to the china cupboard and turned on a light. Immediately it went off and on twelve times. We tested other lights and they all stayed on when turned on. There was no loose fuse. That light in the cupboard had not acted that way before…”　

その晩、キチンの食器棚にゆき、ライトをOnにした。すぐにそれは消え、ついたり消えたり、12回、それがつづいた。我々はほかのライトをテストした。Onにすれば、そのままOnでついたなりであった。フューズがゆるんでいるということはなかった。そして、食器棚のところのライトが、そんなふうにふるまったことは一度もなかった。
