　Allen SpraggettがDr. Nandor Fodorに最後のInterviewを行ったとき（Interviewがおわってしばらくして、Dr. Fodorは亡くなった）、サイキックな現象の研究でDead still live死者が生きているということをStrong evidenceまちがいないといえるほどに証明することが可能と思いますかという質問に対して、Fodorは、Strong evidenceというのがどういう程度なものか特定しなければならないし、Human survival　の証拠は、非常に得るのが難しいし、Evidenceと思っても、沢山の解釈が可能かもしれない、実際、本当に確信できる証拠というのは、Very rareめったにない、しかし、時たま、そういう確信を抱けるようなケースに出会うこともある。と応えたアトで、Dr. Fodorは自分の出遭ったケースについて語っている。

　I cannot look back on more than three occasions when I was convinced at the time, and have been ever since, that there was evidence of human survival. One instance was a contact with my father in a trumpet séance in which I heard his voice. The second …   (The unexplained, Allen Spraggett Page 204).

　私が当時それを確信したケースというのは３回だけである。そして、それ以来、それを信じている、死んでからも違った次元で人間は生きているという証拠を掴んだということを。ひとつは亡くなった私の父の声をトランペットSéanceで聞いたときだ。ほかに・・・。

　ここで、Dr. FodorはSéanceで父親の声を聞いて、Human Survivalを確信したという。Maurice Barbanellの「This is Spiritualism」の第３章は“あの世からの声”と題されている。彼、Barbanellも、Dr. Fodorと同じような意見を言っている。

The most convincing and sustained evidence of the after-life that I have received has come to me at direct-voice séances. Though I have read all the worth-while literature in Spiritualism produced in the last hundred years, I have not come across any accounts to excel the proofs received in the séance-room of Estelle Roberts, one of the world’s greatest mediums and the possessor of nearly every psychic faculty.　

あの世があるということの最も納得のいく持続的な証明は“声を直接に聞く”というDirect-voice Séanceに参加したときに体験した。この百年の間にSpiritualismが生み出した、読むに値する文献をみんな読んだわたしだが、わたしが参加したEstelle RobertsのSéanceほどその証明に関して秀でたものに出遭ったためしは無い。彼女は世界中でも最も偉大なMediumの一人であり、あらゆるサイキック現象を引き起こせる能力を持った人である。

There, once a fortnight, it was my privilege to be present when dramatic reunion between the living and the so-called dead were enacted. At their best, and this was a frequent occurrence, there conversation was so natural that it was heard to believe that one of the two participating voices I heard emanated from a speaker across the gulf of death.　

二週間に一度、死者と生者とが演じる劇的な再会の場に居ることができるという特権を私はもっていた。うまくいったとき、そしてそれは大概ソウなのだが、会話はとても自然で二人の会話者の一人の声が死という深い淵を超えた死者の声だとは信じられないほどであった。

The spirit voice came through what was called a trumpet, though it was really a megaphone in the shape of a cone, and made out of tin. These were always held in pitch darkness at the request of medium’s spirit guide.　

Spiritの声は、いわゆるトランペットからやってくるようであった。それはトランペットというよりも、普通のメガホンで、とんがったConeのかたちをしていて、ブリキTinでできていた。そして、いつもMediumのガイドの要請で、真っ暗闇の中で行われるのが常であった。

When I asked whether he could obtain the result if the room had a faint illumination, his answer was: “You give me my conditions and I will produce the evidence.” He certainly fulfilled his promise, as I shall describe.　

私が少しぐらい明かりがあっても可能じゃないのかと訪ねたところ、ガイドのこたえは、“私の要求することを満たしてくれたら、私は証拠を提供する”ということで、確かに、彼は約束を果たしてくれた、いずれ記述するつもりだが。

I should explain that darkness, or a ruby light, is usual for this form of psychic phenomena and for materialization. The guides responsible for these results say that the process involved is akin to the germination of life, which always requires darkness.　

私はこの種の現象（Direct－Voice　と物が現れる場合）が起きるには、ふつう、暗黒か赤いライトのなかでだということを説明しておこう。ガイドの説明では、それは生命が発芽するのに暗黒が必要とされるのと似たようなものだとのことである。

Spirit voices can sometimes be produced in ordinary light. I heard this phenomenon at a spontaneous and unexpected demonstration when I was in America. As part of my lecture tour, I had reached Lily Dale, New York, which is America’s largest Spiritualist camp. It is not, as you might infer from this description, a collection of tents. It is a small town with two hotels which, in the summer months, becomes the Mecca of thousands interested in Spiritualism. Nearly all phases of psychic phenomena are demonstrated by as many as sixty or seventy mediums. There is an auditorium which holds two thousand people.　

しかし、時には、Spiritの声は普通の明かりのもとでも生み出されることがある。私はアメリカに居たとき、この現象を、予期しない、思いがけないDemonstrationで体験した。私の講演旅行の一部として、私はたまたまニューヨーク州のLily Daleという町に着いた。そこはアメリカ最大のSpiritualistのCamp場で、Campとはいいながら、テントをいっぱいはったということではなく、小さな街でホテルは二つだけ、しかし、夏になると、Spiritualismのメッカとして、何千という人があつまる。（ムラタ注：今は人口３００人足らずの町だが、夏の間は２万人を超える人があつまるといわれている。）６０人か７０人に及ぶMediumがあらゆる種類のサイキック現象を演じるようである。二千人を収容する講堂もあるほどだ。

On the day of our arrival, a tea party was given in honor of my wife and myself. To it were invited all the mediums then staying in Lily Dale, It was a brilliant summer afternoon, with sunlight streaming through the windows. There was a hubbub of conversation, as is usual when seventy or eighty people are having tea. Many of them were smoking.　

私たちがついた日、私と妻を歓迎して茶話会がひらかれ、Lily Daleに滞在しているすべてのMediumが招待されていた。明るい夏の午後で、陽光は窓から差し込んでいた。７０人か８０人の集まっているときにいつも起きる会話でやかましく、沢山のひとがタバコをすっていた。

Yet in these surroundings, which I would have regarded as being unfavourable to psychic phenomena, I had an outstanding experience. My wife was introduced to a stranger, a medium named Mrs. Ann Keiser, who had come from Buffalo. I must stress that this was their first meeting.

しかも、そうした環境で、私だったらサイキックな現象が起きるには不適切なといえるほどであったが、すばらしい体験をすることになった。妻はひとりの見知らぬ人に紹介された。Mediumの名前はミセス・アン・カイザーといい、バッファローから来た人だった。私はこれは、この人とは、はじめての会合であったということを強調しておく。

Unexpectedly, a third voice broke into the conversation and announced itself as belonging to my wife’s dead grandmother. She gave her name and mentioned that my wife had been named after her. This statement was correct and was one which the medium could not have known, seeing that the grandmother had died in Britain. I say this confidently because even I did not know my wife had been named after her maternal grandmother. She had died when my wife was three years old.　

思いがけず、三人目の声が会話に飛び込んできた。そして、妻の亡くなったおばあさんだと自己紹介をした。彼女は自分の名前を告げ、私の妻の名前は自分にちなんだものだと伝えた。これは、正しい情報であった。そして、Mediumが知っているはずが無いものであった。おばあさんはイギリスで亡くなったのだから。私はこの件については自信を持っている。というのは、私でさえ、妻の名前が母方のおばあさんからきたということを知らなかったくらいなのだ。彼女は妻が三歳の時に亡くなった。

Next came the equally audible spirit voice of my wife’s dead brother, a victim of the First World War, who also gave his name and said: “I have been waiting for this opportunity to talk to you.” My wife came to me to describe this unexpected happening　

次に、よく聞き取れる声で、妻の亡くなった兄弟、（彼は第一次大戦の犠牲者であったが、）が自分の名前を言い、“わたしはお前に話しかけるこの機会を長い間待っていたのだよ”といった。妻はこの予期せぬ出来事を私に伝えた。

I took Mrs. Keiser into the adjoining room, where there was less noise, wondering whether the demonstration would be repeated. At first there was a sibilant whisper, which gradually became louder, until my dead brother-in-law was speaking quite distinctly and in a masculine voice. All that he said was of a highly evidential nature, referred to matters which had arisen since I left England and answered some questions which were in my mind, though the medium knew nothing about them.　

私はミセス・カイザーを隣の部屋につれてゆき、そこはもう少し静かだったので、彼女のサイキックな現象がまたあらわれるかと期待した。最初、シューシューという音がしていたが、だんだん音は大きくなり、聞こえ出したのは、わたしの亡くなった義理の兄弟が、はっきりと、男の声で話していたのだった。彼が語ったことはすべて、たしかな証拠といえるものであったし、私がイギリスを発ってからおきた事柄についても言及していた。そして、わたしの頭の中にあった疑問に対して、返答してくれた、それは当然のことながら、Mediumが知っているはずがなかったことである。

The spirit voice, so far as I could tell, came from the region of the medium’s solar plexus. All the time that the voice was speaking, Mrs. Keiser’s lips were tightly closed. This was a phenomenon that could not be explained away by ventriloquism. And it was certainly not the medium’s voice.　

Spiritの声は、私が判断できた限りでは、ミセス・カイザーのSolar Plexus太陽神経叢、みぞおち　からやってくるようであった。声が出ている間中、ミセス・カイザーの唇はかたく閉じられていた。これは、腹話術では説明できない現象であった。そして、声はあきらかにMediumのものではなかった。

Every medium has a spirit guide. … Frequently they are Red Indians, a fact which puzzles newcomers. The answer is not far to seek. In the days of their prime, the North America Indians were masters of psychic laws, with a profound knowledge of supernormal forces and how they operated. This qualifies them, after their passing, to act as tutors and guides to their mediums.　

どのMediumもSpiritガイドをもっている。しばしば、それはRed Indianアメリカ・インディアンである。なぜ、そうなのか新米は不思議がる。答えは極めて簡単である。かれらが栄えていたとき、北アメリカではインディアンがサイキックの主人であった。普通と違う能力に関してきわめてよく知っていて、うまく扱いこなしていた。このことが、彼らが死んでから、Mediumたちの指導者、Spiritガイドとして行動するようになっているわけである。

　Estelle RobertsのSpiritガイドはRed Cloudといい、ものすごく有名になった。Maurice　Barbanellは一度、肉体を持ってあらわれたのを目撃したが、あとは声を聞くだけであったが、まるで実在の親友のように、友達づきあいをする関係となったそうである。

　ということで、Dr. Nandor Fodorだけでなく、Maurice　Barbanellも、Direct-voiceに接することによって、After-lifeあの世でSpiritが生きていることに確信を持った、つまり、Life After LifeまたはLife After Deathを確信したということである。

New YorkのLily DaleというCityを地図で調べると、Buffaloからはるか下、ドライブで１時間ほどかかるらしいところにある。どちらかというとペンシルバニア州に近く、エリー湖のほとりに近い。一度、夏〔６月から９月がシーズンで毎日行事があり、一週間参加するだけでGate　Fee５０ドルとか、シーズン中なら１９０ドルとか）でなくても、訪問してみたいと思うが、今は私は飛行機も大変なので、残念だ。登録されているMediumだけでも、リストで沢山いるようである。もっと早く気がついていたら、一週間ほどLily Daleに滞在して、私の好奇心、探求心を満足させられたのにと、なくした機会が悔やまれる。このBarbanellの話で妻の兄弟が、いわば”逢いたかった”というような言葉を発したのをきくと、やはり、映画Ghostにあらわされたように、故人が連絡を取りたいと思っても、地上の人間がすぐれたMediumに接するとか積極的に行動しないと無理なのかもしれない。New Yorkまで行くのは大変なので、Los AngelesですぐれたMediumをさがさねばならないと、今、思う。わたしのほうで、努力をしたという姿勢は示さねば、これだけ沢山の本を読んだ意味が無いように思われる。
