「心霊現象の科学」をめぐってーその３６　Mediumship をめぐって--- Maurice Barbanell　“This is Spiritualism”を読む（つづき）第１５章　Spirit Signature　から (page 117-120).

　５０年以上前に書かれた本。この“その３６”は、この“Spirit Signature”の抜粋・紹介が主になるでしょう。版権がどうなのかわかりませんが、勝手に引用して、意訳させてもらいます。

　Psychic Scienceのなかでも、“あの世の存在証明”以外に一番科学的証明がむつかしそうなのが、あるいは実験不可能なのがMediumが時に示すMaterializationとかTeleportation, Apportsとかです。１９世紀、後半から２０世紀初めのMediumのなかには、インチキを暴こうという否定的な科学者があつまっているなかで、自分のMediumの才能を発揮しようとして、できないために、インチキなトリックでごまかそうとして、見破られるというケースがたくさんありました。(Eusapia Paladino etc…). ホンモノのサイキックは、まわりのエネルギーに影響されるので、にせものをあばいてやろうというNegativeな姿勢を持った人が集まった場所では、全然、サイキックな実力を発揮できないわけでした。それが、逆にホンモノだといえるのであって、トリックであればいつでも可能なはずです。

　この第１５章にはLouis BoltというMediumの驚くべきMaterializationが示されています。このMaterializationは簡単にはできないので、彼女は１年に１回だけ行ったと書かれています。

　Her slight, pale figure suggested anything but a materialization medium. Yet it was at some of her séance that I saw my most outstanding results in this phase of mediumship. The séance I am about to describe is one that will always live in my memory, for a spirit promise was fulfilled that night. A materialized form stood in front of me and, as he said he would do, some months earlier, wrote his signature on a piece of paper which I held out to him. ….　
　Medium　ミセス・ボルト　Mrs. Boltの姿形をみただけでは、だれも物体を現象させるMediumとは思えない。しかし、わたしはもっとも見事な現象を目撃した。わたしが語ろうとしているSéanceは私の記憶にいつまでも残っているだろう。というのは、Spiritはその夜、約束を果たしたのだった。人間の形をした像が私の前に立ち、彼が約束したように私がもちだした紙にサインを書いたのだ。

　A few minutes after the séance began, the four other visitors and I felt the cold psychic breezes which always accompany the production of these phenomena. Just as the cabinet, we are told, is used to store and condense the spirit power necessary to produce materializations, so the cold breezes are said to indicate part of the process used by the invisible operators to obtain their results. The drop in the temperature is unmistakable.
　Séanceが始まって数分ののち、５人の同席者はサイキックな空気の動きを感じた。それは、必ず、この種の現象が現れるときに、おきることなのだ。キャビネットが、物体が現れるのに必要なSpirit Powerを保持し、密度を高めるのにつかわれるように、冷たい空気の流れは見えない操縦者が作業を始めている印なのだといわれている。温度が目だって低下した。

　From within the cabinet there appeared a small, white hand, which, we were informed, belonged to Ethel, the guide in charge of the phenomena. In a short, gentle voice, we heard her ask: ”Can you see may face?” Then she appeared in front of the cabinet, a beautiful figure, clad in dazzling white raiment. I noticed, as I have frequently done, that although a red light illuminated the room the ectoplasmic robing was snowy whited, Neither did it reflected the red light.
　キャビネットの中から小さな、白い手が現れた。それはこの現象をしきるガイドであるEthelエセルというSpiritのものなのだ。短い、穏やかな声がして、「私の顔がみえますか？」と訊ねた。それから、彼女はキャビネットの前に現れ出た。美しい姿で、まぶしいような白い衣装を身につけて。赤いライトが部屋を照らしていたが、Ectoplasmicな衣装は雪のように真っ白で、しかも赤いライトを反射していないのに気がついた。

　Ethel insisted on showing us her striking beautiful face-incidentally, it bore no resemblance to that of the medium. Mrs. Bolt is good-looking, but she would be the first to admit that her features could not compare in beauty with those of her guide.
　エセルEthelはやがて彼女のめだって美しい顔を私達に見せるといった。ミセス・ボルトは美人だが、とても美しさの点では、Spiritガイドのエセルとは比較にならないと自分から認めたであろう。

　Ethel asked each one of us to step forward and shake hands with her. Her hand was soft and warm. To all intents and purposes it resembled a completely formed human hand. When I shook hands with her, she allowed the drapery over her arm to brush me. I asked permission to handle this spirit robing, and it was readily given. I can only describe it as having a gossamer texture, far softer than the finest silk, and giving me the impression of feeling cobwebs.
　エセルはひとりひとりに前に出て彼女と握手するように求めた。それは完全な人間の手の形をしていた。彼女が私と握手したとき、彼女の腕の被いがわたしをかすった。私はこのSpiritの衣装に触ってもよいかと許可を求め、OKをもらってから、手で触った。それは最高の絹よりもソフトで繊細なうすもののベールのようで、わたしはクモの糸のようだと思った。

　One of the five visitors was Lady Caillard, whose husband, Sir Vincnt, had promised to materialize. In earth life he was a well-known industrialist who had been president of the Federation of British Industries. I had not met him, before his passing, but had got to know his voice through hearing it at séances with Estelle Roberts and Louis Bolt. The voice I heard coming from cabinet was similar to Sir Vincent’s speech as I had heard it at other séances. The best testimony, however, came from his wife, who was easily able to identify it.
　同席者の５人の一人は、ミセス　Caillardケイヤードで、彼女の夫が、つぎのSéanceで肉体として現前するであろうと約束していたのだ。サー・ヴィンセントはよく知られた工業経営者でイギリス工業会の会長も務めたことがあった。わたしは彼の生前、彼に会った事は無いが、その死後、Estelle RobertsとLouis BoltのSéanceで彼の声を聞く機会はあった。私がその夜、キャビネットの奥から聞いた声は別のSéanceで何度か聞いた声であった。しかし、一番信頼のおける証言はミセスからで、彼女はたやすく本人だと判断できた。

　“I am doing my best”, he said to her;　”it all seems so difficult, because I am excited. I shall be with you in a moment. Let me get strong enough to bear the light.” This clearly indicated that, in addition to the labours of guides, the manifesting entity also has his contribution to make.
　「わたしは、ベストをつくしているのだよ。」と彼は言った。「とてもむつかしいんだよ。私は今、とても興奮しているから。すぐに出てくるよ。灯りをがまんできるように強くなる準備をしてるんだ。」この言葉は、Spiritガイドの作業に加えて、現れようとするSpiritのほうも、努力をしなければならないということを示している。

　Next Sir Vincent addressed to me, saying; ”I shall keep my promise.” A few moments later I heard him say to Lady Caillard: “I am quite ready. I am more than ready.” In an earnest tone he prayed: “Oh God, give me strength.”
　それから、サー・ヴィンセントは私に向かって、「わたしは約束を守るよ」と言った。そして、しばらくして、私は彼がLady Caillardに「用意は出来た。はりきっているよ。」というのを聞いた。彼はまじめな態度で「オー、神さま、私に力を与え給え」と祈るのが聞こえた。

　Then he appeared in front of the cabinet’s curtains. He was several inches taller than Ethel. I would have guessed his height as six feet. His features were completely materialized, even to his distinctive moustache. He called his wife by the nickname that she said he always used when addressing her. Then he turned to the side of the cabinet where there were some roses, brought by his wife, which had been placed in a bowl on a table. “My flowers,” he exclaimed. With a clearly visible materialized hand, he took two roses out of the bowl and asked her to come forward. When she did so, he handed the flowers to her. “This is our final accomplishment,” he said. First he took her by the hand, and then he embraced her.
　それから、彼はキャビネットのカーテンの前に現れた。彼はガイドのエセルよりも数インチ高く、６フィートほどであった。彼の姿は完全に現象していた。めだった口ひげにいたるまで。彼はミセスをニックネームで呼び、それは彼がいつも妻に声をかけるときのものであった。それから、彼はキャビネットの横に向き直った。そこには妻がもってきたバラがテーブルの上の鉢に活けてあった。「わたしの花だ。」彼は叫んだ。明らかに目に見える形をもった手で、鉢から２本バラをぬきとり、妻に前にくるように言った。そして、彼は彼女に花を手渡した。「これは、わたしたちの最後の達成だ。」と言い、彼女の手をとり、それから彼女を抱きしめた。

　Lady Caillard, a practicing Roman Catholic, had started her inquiry into Spiritualism when her husband’s passing left her grief-stricken with bereavement. Gradually the evidence for his survival had accumulated through many mediums and varied phases of phenomena. This, however, was the first time that he had materialized, to keep a promise he had made at earlier séances.
　Lady Caillardは実際的にはローマ・カトリックに属したが、夫がなくなってから、悲しみにとらわれ、Spiritualismで夫のことを探すようになった。たくさんのMediumとのつきあいから、だんだん、夫が別の次元でSurviveしているということがわかった。しかし、こうして、形を持って彼女の目の前に現れる経験というのは、初めてであった。別のSéanceでお前の前に現出するよといった約束を果たすためにMaterializedしたのは。

　The scene that was enacted in front of us was one at which I felt I had no right to be present. This was a moving reunion between a dead husband and his living wife, the greatest of all human dramas, one charged with supreme emotion. The materialized Sir Vincent kissed his wife several times and, during their embraces, whispered words of endearment and encouragement to her. He had already told his wife, a very sick woman, at previous séances, that their reunion was not far away. He referred again to their forthcoming reunion which, incidentally, took place five months later, when she died.
　この夫婦再会の場面はわたしたちの目の前で演じられたが、わたしは自分はこの場面にいる資格はないと思った。これは死んだ夫と生きている妻との感動的な再会であった。人間の演ずるドラマの中で崇高な感情にいろどられた最高のドラマであった。現れたサー・ヴィンセントは妻に何度かキスをし、抱擁している間、彼女に親愛な感情を示し、力づけようとした。彼は既に、かなり病気の重い妻に、前のSéanceで自分達が会えるのは、もうすぐだと語っていたのである。再度、そのことを伝えたようで、実際、彼女が亡くなったのは、それから５ヵ月後のことであった。

 　When she returned to her seat in the séance room, Sir Vincent insisted on shaking hands with each one of us. Like Ethel’s, his was a real hand. I know it was. When he shook hands with me, he slapped me with his other hand. They certainly belonged to a man! His hands were harder than Ethel’s, which I had clasped earlier in the séance.
　彼女がSéanceの部屋の自分の席に戻ったとき、サー・ヴィンセントはわれわれ一人ひとりと握手をすると言い出した。エセルの場合と同様、彼の手はホンモノの手であった。まちがいない。彼は私と握手するとき、別の手でたたいてみせた。それは明らかに男の手であった。先に握手をしたエセルの手にくらべると、より堅い手触りであった。

　Then he asked me for my notebook on which to write his signature, and so fulfill his promise made at an earlier séance…. His wife handed him a pencil. I held my notebook with the plain sheet of paper on top of it. “Now we can see through a glass darkly, but then face to face,” he said.
　それから、かれは私のノートにサインをすると前のSéanceで約束していたので、それを実行するといいだした。妻から鉛筆を受け取り、私がノートの上においたきれいな白紙を差し出した。「今や私達はガラス越しに、暗いけれども顔と顔をつきあわせてお互いを見ることが出来る。」と彼は言った。

　Then he wrote his signature, “Have I kept my promise?” he asked. I assured him that he had. Sir Vincent stepped right out of the cabinet and showed us that he was a fully-formed, materialized figure. “It has been a grand reunion,” he said.
　そして、彼はサインをした。「約束を守ったかね」と彼はたずね、”その通り”と私は確認した。サー・ヴィンセントはキャビネットから歩み出て、自分が完全に形をなして現れているのをみんなに見せた。「立派な再会だった」と彼は言った。

　Even this was not the end of the séance. … Thus, at one séance, three distinctive, yet different materializations had been made visible to us. …
　このサー・ヴィンセントの出現だけで、このSéanceは終わらなかった。このあと、３つの明らかな、しかし異なった物体が出現したのであった。　（以下、省略　－　ムラタ）。

　ここでは、この自称３０００回以上もSéanceに出席したというSéanceのベテランが、その経歴の中で、もっとも印象的で忘れがたかった、あの世からの人間の現出という場面を目撃したことが語られていた。

　彼はこのあと、同じ第１５章で、この体験から、新約聖書とイエス・キリストそして１２使徒に関する考察を記している、これも重要なので、次回に紹介することにする。

　今回は、ほとんどMaurice Barbanellの本の引用で終わってしまったが、これは紹介する価値あるものであったと信じる。

　次回は、同じ章からまた沢山引用することになるが聖書研究にとっても、刺激的な内容であると思う。
