　第11章　Gifts from Beyond　霊界からの贈り物　（その3）最終回です。名探偵ホームズ（三毛猫でなくホンモノ、シャーロックのほう）の創作で探偵小説隆盛のきっかけを作ったSir Arthur Conan Doyle　は、熱心なPsychic現象の探究者でもありました。その彼が亡くなって、何かあったのか、というのがこのBarbanellのお話です。

　Conan Doyle　（1859-1930）　医者であったドイルが、エキストラの収入の手段として名探偵ホームズを書き始めたのが1887年、最後のホームズは１９０５年。ドイルはサイキック方面の研究、Spiritualism、歴史書などのほうが自分の大事な仕事だと思っていたが、名探偵が有名になりすぎて、ほかの仕事の方は忘れ去られたわけででした。

　１９３０年、亡くなった年に、“The Edge of the Unknown”というオカルト・サイエンスの本を出版しています。

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was responsible for an apport which made a tremendous impression on his family. The medium, Mrs. Caird Miller, discovered her psychic power in extraordinary circumstances. …　

サー・アーサー・コナン・ドイルは彼の家族にものすごい印象を与えたApport（この場合はKey）の出現に直接関係している。

Mrs. Caird Miller knew practically nothing of Spiritualism until a series of strange events happened shortly after Sir Arthur’s passing. …　

Mrs. Caird Millerはサー・アーサーが亡くなってから、一連の不思議な出来事が起きるまではSpiritualismとは全く関係がなかった。

Although a widow twice bereaved, Mrs. Caird Miller had no interest in psychic matters until she had a curious conversation with a stranger. Seated in the tea-room of a large West End store, she noticed that a woman at her table seemed anxious to get into conversation with her. Her natural reserve made her resent this approach from a stranger, but the woman was insistent. “I am a Spiritualist,” she said, “and I saw you in a vision this morning.”　

ミセス・ミラーは二度も夫に先に死なれた未亡人であるが、未知の人と奇妙な会話を持つまではサイキックなことにも興味を持ったことはなかった。大きなWest Endの店の喫茶室で座っていると、別のテーブルについているある女性が彼女に話しかけたそうな様子をしているのに気がついた。彼女は自然な防御本能で、この知らない人が話しかはるのを拒絶する姿勢を示した。しかし、その女性はしつっこかった。「私はSpiritualistで、今朝、あなたのVisionを見た」、と彼女は言った。

This comment annoyed Mrs. Caird Miller, who regarded the stranger as a crank. Nothing, however, would daunt the woman, who proceeded to describe a spirit form that she said was visible to her in the tea-room. This made Mrs. Caird Miller take notice, for it was a perfect description of her husband, who died not long before.　

このコメントがミセス・ミラーを当惑させた。そして、その女性は変わり者に違いないと思った。それでも、なにものにもその女性はひるまないようであった。そして、この喫茶室でも彼女に見えるSpiritのかたちを述べ始めた。これが、ミセス・ミラーの注意を引いた。というのは、その人物を描写しているSpiritの姿というのは彼女の夫の姿であった、そして彼はすこし前に亡くなったばかりなのだ。

Her curiosity aroused, she made an extensive inquiry into Spiritualism, finally discovering that she herself possessed a psychic gift. Unmistakable voice would speak to her and give definite messages. Often these voices gave information on matters unknown to her, but which, on inquiry, she always found were correct.　

彼女の好奇心は沸き起こり、それ以来、Spiritualismをいっぱい勉強した。そして、とうとう、自分がサイキック・ギフトをもっているということを発見したのであった。誰だかわからない声が彼女に話しかけ、確かなメッセージをのこした。しばしば、この声は彼女の知らない情報を伝え、あとで調べてみると、いつも正しいのを発見するのであった。

About a month after Conan Doyle’s death, she heard a voice declare in clear tones: “I am Arthur Conan Doyle. I want you to get into touch with my wife and send her a message.”　

コナン・ドイルの死から約１ヶ月経って、彼女ははっきりとした声で、「自分はアーサー・コナン・ドイルだ、私はあなたが私の家内にコンタクトして、メッセージを伝えて欲しい」、と言うのを聞いた。

This surprised Mrs. Caird Miller, who had never met the great writer. She did not know his wife or any member of the family. Her reserve was a barrier to approaching Lady Doyle unless she were absolutely sure of her ground. “Give me some proof of your identity”, she demanded. The voice replied by giving the initials of every member of his family. When she made inquiries she found that they were all accurate.

このことはミセス・ミラーをびっくりさせた。彼女は一度もこの偉大な作家に会ったことも無かった。彼女は彼の妻も家族のメンバーも、誰も知らなかった。彼女の保身策としては、自分がどこに立っているのかをはっきり知らねば、Lady Doyleに近づくことも不可能だということであった。“あなたが、本当にそうだという何らかの証拠を示して頂戴”と彼女は要求し、声は、家族のメンバー全員のイニシアルを言ってきた。彼女があとでそのことで調べた結果、すべて正しかった。

Still hesitant, she said to the Doyle voice when it next repeated the request: “Where shall I find your wife?” The reply came quite clearly. The voice gave her a telephone number, told her she would not find it in the telephone book, but said it was the unlisted number of the Doyle cottage in the New Forest.

それでも、ためらって、彼女は次にドイルが同じ要求を伝えたとき、どこにあなたの奥さんがいるのと訊ねた。返事はきわめてはっきりと返ってきた。彼女に電話番号を伝え、電話簿にはみつからないだろう、無記名にしてあるから、そしてドイルのNew ForestのCottageの電話番号だと伝えた。

This was a test. Still cautious, Mrs. Caird Miller decided that before approaching Lady Doyle she would try to ascertain whether the number was correct. She inquired of the telephone exchange, but was met with the reply that they were not allowed to divulge such information.　

これはテストであった。まだ用心深く、ミセス・ミラーはLady Doyleに接触する前にナンバーが正しいか確かめようと決心し、電話交換台に訊いて見た。しかし、情報は公開できないと断られてしまった。

Here was a deadlock. Mrs. Caird Miller hesitated for a few moments and then asked the operator to call the number the voice had given her. The number was accurate, for soon she was talking to Lady Doyle. At that time the Doyle family were being flooded with alleged spirit messages from all over the world, Lady Doyle and her two sons rightly insisted that they would not accept spirit communications claiming to emanate from Sir Arthur unless they were accompanied by irrefutable evidence to prove their authenticity.　

ここで、行き詰まってしまって、ミセス・ミラーはチョットためらってから、思いきって、あの声からもらったナンバーにつないでくれとオペレーターに頼んだ。ナンバーはまちがいなかった。彼女はLady Doyleに直接話していたのだった。そのころ、ドイル家では、スピリットからのメッセージだという世界中から入ってくる洪水のような情報過多に悩まされていたので、Lady Doyleとふたりの息子達は、まともな要求をした。つまり、それがまさにサー・アーサー本人からのものだというまちがいのない証拠がないことには、たとえスピリット・メッセージだといっても受け付けられないと応えたのであった。

This was indeed a rebuff. Mrs. Caird Miller had carried out the instructions of the voice, and had met with failure. She determined to have nothing more to do with it. But Sir Arthur was undismayed. A few days later she heard his voice again. He knew about the rebuff, he said, but he was determined to prove himself through this new medium. “Will you go and have a séance with Mrs. Deane,” he asked, “and I will appear on a photograph?”　

これは、実際、ひじ鉄砲を食らわせられた様なものであった。ミセス・ミラーは声が指示するとおりに動いて、この失敗となったのである。もう、コンナ面倒なことはしてやるものかと決心した。しかし、サー・アーサーはべつに驚きはしなかった、二三日後、また、あの声を聞いた。彼は拒絶されたことを知っていた。しかし、彼としては、このあたらしいMediumを通して、自分自身を証明したいと決心したのだった。そこで、Mrs. DeaneのSéanceに参加してくれ、わたしが写真にうつるようにするから、と言った。

This sitting with Mrs. Deane, a medium for spirit photography, was arranged anonymously, and no hint was given of its purpose. When the plate was developed and a print made, in addition to Mrs. Caird Miller’s photograph there was a striking “extra” of Conan Doyle above her head. This spirit “extra” was shown to Lady Doyle, who admitted that it was a remarkable one which bore an unquestionable resemblance to her husband. Even then, however, she demanded still more proof.　

このミセス・ディーンはSpirit Photographyを得意とすることで有名だった人で、ミセス・ミラーは匿名で、目的も告げないで、Séanceを手配し、プレートがひきのばされ、プリントができてみると、ミセス・ミラーの写真のほかに、彼女の頭の上にコナン・ドイルの顔がまさにぴったりという感じでエキストラにうつっていた。このSpirit　Extra写真をLady Doyleに見せたところ、本当に間違いなく彼女の夫によくにているといったが、しかし、それでも、彼女は納得せず、もっと証拠を欲しがった。

That, thought Mrs. Caird Miller, was the last straw. But the persistent Conan Doyle provided the required proof. It came a few days later, when Mrs. Caird Miller was in her London flat. She had not long awakened and gone into another room. When she returned to her bedroom, she found a key lying on her pillow. She looked at the key in amazement. It did not belong to any door in her flat. How it got there was a mystery.

もう、これで、おわりだとミセス・ミラーは思った。しかしながら、コナン・ドイルはまだあきらめずに、次の証拠を用意した。それは、二三日たってやってきた。ミセス・ミラーはロンドンのアパートの部屋に居た。彼女は目が覚めてまだまもなく、隣の部屋に行っていた。寝室に戻ってくると、枕の上にKeyがおいてあるのを見つけた。驚いてKeyをみつめた。それは、彼女のアパートのどのドアーの鍵とも違った。どうして、そんなものがここへやってきたのかもミステリーであった。

As she stood there, wondering, she heard the now familiar Conan Doyle voice say: “That is my key. It comes from the door of my study, which is always kept closed, at Crowborough. Send for my son, Denis.” Here was a test – if the statement were true.

　彼女はソコに立ち止まって、どうなっているのかと思っていると、今ではよく聞きなれた声で、コナン・ドイルが、「それは私のKeyなんだ。Crowboroughにある、私の書斎のドアーのKeyで、そこはいつもロックされているのだ。息子のDenisを呼んでおくれ」、と言った。ここにテストがある。彼の言っていることが本当かどうか。

Mrs. Caird Miller telephoned Denis Conan Doyle at Crowborough Sussex, and told him what had happened. In a few minutes he had jumped itno a motor car and was on his way to London. He arrived at Mrs. Caird Miller’s flat, and took the key back to Crowborough. Later he telephoned to say that it was certainly the key of his father’s study. Sir Arthur had transported it a distance of forty miles. That convinced Lady Doyle.　

ミセス・ミラーはCrowborough　Sussex　の　Denis Conan Doyleに電話して、何が起きたかを説明した。すこしたって、彼はモーター・カーに飛び乗り、ロンドンに向かった。ミセス・ミラーのアパートに着き、Keyをもらって、Crowboroughに戻った。そのあと、彼は電話をしてきて、確かに彼の父親の書斎のKeyであったと伝えた。サー・アーサーはKeyを運んだのだが、それは４０マイルの距離であった。これで、やっとLady Doyleもミセス・ミラーがホンモノであり、夫のSpiritにコンタクトしているのだと了解した。

Thereafter, Mrs. Caird Miller became the medium through whom spirit messages were regularly transmitted from Sir Artur to his wife and family.　

それからは、ミセス・ミラーはサー・アーサーから規則的に発する、妻や家族の者達へのメッセージの伝達者となった。

　ということで、地上で亡くなったコナン・ドイルは自分のSpiritとしての存在を新しいMedium経由家族のものに、伝えたのであった。

　この件について、気がついたことは、ふつうMediumにはSpirit　Guideがついて、仲を取り持つ形になるのだが、驚いたことに、ここではConan Doyle自らが、声を響かせる形でMediumに直接関係し、最後の証明といえるTeleportationもどうしたのかは不明だが、まるでコナン・ドイル自身がApportをやりとげたようである。もしかして、Spiritガイドを動かして、やらせたのかもしれない。

　これで、どうであろうか。Life after Death　またはLife after Lifeが証明されたであろうか。

　Mediumに接しての、本物の声での伝言、本人ぐらいしか知らない情報、そして、ある種のMediumのそばにいると写真にもうつるということ、そして、なによりも科学を当惑させるTeleportation,　Apportの発現。　そして、まるで生きている人のような反応ぶり。これをインチキだとかといっても、何を説明したことにもならない。こういう事実が起るということ。現代の科学ではまだまだ説明不可能で、信じられないような話だが、いずれ、科学がもっと進歩し、今まで不思議ということですませていた現象を説明できるようになり、Teleportationなどが可能になる時がくるということを信じて、解明への努力を続けるしかないであろう。こういう”現象”が、想像でなく、実際に起きているのだから、今わからないだけで、可能なことは事実なのだ。
